THE JUTE JOURNAL

From weekly Newsletter to multi-award winning Newsbrand in 1 year

Founded by Eva Milne in February 2025, The Jute Journal became Dundee University’s first student newspaper in more than 30 years. Within a year, it grew from a weekly newsletter into an award-winning publication, producing three print editions and reporting throughout a period of financial crisis at the university.

IN ONE YEAR:

70+ Articles Published • 3 Print Editions • Best Publication • Student News-brand of the Year • Design of the Year • Student Journalist of the Year

Praise

The Jute Journal received recognition from the Student Publication Association, The Herald Student Press Awards and the University of Dundee during its first year.

“In a time of crisis, as its university made national headlines for all the wrong reasons, it stepped up to give students a voice.”

“Eva’s reporting has combined investigative depth with clarity and balance, from exposing the real impact of cuts to holding leadership to account and translating complex financial issues for readers.” (The Glasgow Herald Editorial Team)

“A very welcome addition to campus life at Dundee. The free copies around campus help bring students to stories they might not go looking for online.” (Scott Brown, University of Dundee)

PRINT PRODUCTION

From idea to ink.

The first edition introducing The Jute Journal and its mission to bring student journalism back to Dundee.

An in-depth look at Dundee University’s financial crisis and the leadership’s plans for recovery.

Investigating the university’s proposed cuts, their impact on staff and students, and the uni’s future.

“From the first issue to the third, I oversaw the production of The Jute Journal in print, bringing reporting, design and editorial decisions together in a newspaper students could hold in their hands. It was incredibly hard work, but so rewarding; it taught me how to turn an editorial vision into a finished publication, balancing content, layout, deadlines and the practical demands of print production. It was amazing to see it in people’s hand’s acting as a conversation starter around campus.”
